Emera partners with The PREP Academy to offer college and university preparation to African Nova Scotian high school students in Dartmouth
Halifax, Nova Scotia, February 28, 2022
The PREP Academy (PREP) is pleased to announce that Emera Inc. has donated $23,000 to provide college and university preparation programs for African Nova Scotian students.
Emera’s contribution will impact 20 students in PREP Cohorts at Dartmouth High School and Cole Harbour High School. PREP Cohort students receive guidance, tools and support on a variety of topics that help drive success in college and university.
The PREP Academy is a community based non-profit organization that inspires and prepares African Nova Scotian students for college and university. PREP helps students access and navigate resources, experiences, and opportunities that will equip them with the skills to succeed in college, university and their chosen careers. PREP offers culturally informed programs that let students see themselves represented in positions of positive influence.
“I wanted to create The PREP Academy to give students access to knowledge and opportunities that I didn’t experience, opportunities that would have changed and helped shape my journey in obtaining a higher education.” says Ashley Hill, Founder and Executive Director of The PREP Academy. “Emera’s support will allow PREP to deepen our connection with students, getting them prepared to plan for success in
their futures.” says Hill.
“Through our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund, we are excited to partner with The PREP Academy to provide resources and support for young African Nova Scotian students,” says Jennifer Parker, Emera Inc.’s Director or Corporate Communications. “PREP’s university and college preparation programs will help the next generation of leaders overcome barriers and shape a region that is more diverse,
equitable and inclusive.”
African Nova Scotians have faced years of systemic and economic obstacles in gaining access to higher education and have traditionally been economically disadvantaged in Nova Scotia. The PREP Academy’s ultimate goal is to have an economic and social impact in the historic African Nova Scotian communities by influencing the number of African Nova Scotian students who are prepared for and
complete college and university. To learn more about the work The PREP Academy is doing, visit www.theprepacademy.ca
