DARTMOUTH GENERAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION BURSARY FOR AFRICAN NOVA SCOTIA STUDENTS

Post-secondaryThis bursary will have a rotating acknowledgement to a different person of African descent, annually, to promote knowledge of Black excellence and Black history to DGH and the community. This year’s acknowledgement would go to Dr. Ben Cookey, a beloved physician in Halifax and Dartmouth
who passed in 2019. Four $8,000 bursaries for youth- renewable up to 4 years. This bursary aims to be accessible to African Descent high school learners who, through the application process, demonstrate an interest in a diversity of health-related fields. Our goal is also to build cultural competency within the health care system, specifically within the Dartmouth General Hospital. By supporting our staff, we are building on retention and promotion, and by supporting African-descent learners we are building on future capacity and recruitment. Recipients will be
selected using an Afrocentric lens.
Eligibility
This bursary is intended for:
High School Students with interest in health care - Four $8,000 bursaries available, renewable for
up to four years
Must be of African Ancestry
Must be a citizen, permanent resident, landed immigrant or newcomer to Nova Scotia
Enrolled in a health-related program at a recognized post-secondary educational institution
Submission and Application Details
Application must include:
1) Updated CV
2) Proof of acceptance into a recognized post-secondary educational institution
3) Description of ANS Community Involvement (250-500 words)
This could include volunteering, research, or community-related work
Involvement in supporting recreation and sports, church or community organizations and
committees
4) 2 References
Include reference demonstrating a commitment to the ANS community
5) Essay (250-500 words)
Youth Stream: Written statement that explores how your program of study in a health-related
program will effect change within the African Nova Scotian community. Describe the journey that
has brought you to apply for this bursary.

The top 3 applicants will be asked to participate in an interview, which would a 15min presentation
about their essay topic.
*Note that recipients would be expected to participate in promotional material for the DGH Foundation,
related to this bursary.
